A 2006 study by Anderson and McStravik, entitled “Value of Certification: Team Certification and Organizational Performance”, found that, as a measure of skill, a positive correlation exists between Microsoft certification and team performance improvement. Measures of ge neral service excellence and task-level performance were conducted and found that in both categories, individual team member certification was a factor in increasing overall competence and capability of the team as a whole. The study recommended that the composition of IT teams  at leasMt a 40-55% inclusion of Microsoft-certified members in order to achieve top-tier performance in attaining organizational goals.

Microsoft offers a broad certification program; and earning one of several Microsoft Certified Professional designations opens career doors and boosts salaries. The MCP program prioritizes its training by isolating vital technical skill areas of expertise, allowing IT professionals to earn one or more certifications – including Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS), Microsoft Certified Professional Developer (MCPD), Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) and the Microsoft Certified Architect (MCA). This program previously offered certifications as Microsoft Certified System Engineer (MCSE), Microsoft Certified Solution Developer (MCSD) and Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA). Additional certifications are available for IT support personnel.

The process of attaining Microsoft certifications requires that candidates pass a series of exams within the program. Each exam costs approximately $125, depending upon the testing location, and may take 2-3 hours to complete. The20tests generally involve sets of multiple choice questions; but specific tests may also include simulated content for solution building questions that refer to common administrative tasks relating to the topic being tested.

In some cases, employers select job candidates who hold specific MCP certifications, in order to fill jobs that involve Microsoft products and technologies. Other companies may offer their own version of certification programs -- such as the Sun Certified Professional Program, the Red Hat Certification Program, the Oracle Certification Program, the Cisco Career Certification Program, the Ubuntu Certified Professional Program and the Apple Certification Program.
